Step-by-step Business Central guides from our consultants

These Business Central guides explain how the system works and how to set it up, one topic at a time. Each guide uses the page and feature names you see on screen. It walks through the steps in order. It also points out the mistakes we meet most often, so your team can do the work with confidence.

🧭Using the library

How to use these Business Central guides

Every guide answers one question. Pick the topic closest to your task. Read the short answer at the top. Then follow the steps in a sandbox. After that, repeat them in your live company. That order keeps tests away from real ledgers.

The guides use current Business Central online with the standard role centers. If an on-premises install works differently, we say so. Screens change a little with each release wave. So trust the page names and the search box more than the place of a button.

Short on time? Read only the top of each guide. It gives the answer in a few lines. You can then read on if you need the steps. Most readers do just that, and it works well.

🚀Plan and launch

Business Central guides for implementation and go-live

A first project raises the same questions each time. What must you decide before setup? Which data moves across? Who tests what? What happens on cutover weekend? Three guides answer these in order: implementation, the implementation checklist and the go-live checklist.

One guide covers browsers, devices and what an on-premises server needs. Another shows how to set up a cloud environment. A third moves data from an old system into the new company. If the project is new to you, read them in that order.

Do not rush the data part. Bad data causes most go-live pain. Clean it first. Then load a small test batch. Check the result with the people who use it. Then load the rest.

📒Ledgers and close

Finance setup guides for Business Central

Finance teams usually begin with structure. One guide shows how posting, heading and total accounts fit together. Another explains how dimensions replace long account strings. A third shows how to model a cost center with a dimension.

Daily and monthly routines come next. Bank matching, check templates, approval workflows and month-end close each get a guide. A controller can hand any of them to a new team member. Then the result will match from one period to the next.

Keep a short list of rules for your team. Write down who may post, who may approve and who checks the close. A simple list on one page is enough. It saves a lot of time later.

🧮Inventory value

Business Central guides to costing and inventory value

Inventory cost is where most people get confused. The costing guide compares the methods an item can use. It also shows what the cost adjustment routine does to value entries. Two more guides cover unit cost and expected cost, with examples you can repeat.

Read these before you pick a costing method for a new item. Once entries exist, you cannot freely change it. The guides also help an accountant trace an odd margin back to the receipt, invoice or adjustment behind it. Keep them open beside a sandbox.

Take notes as you go. Write down each value you pick and why you picked it. Months later, you will not recall the reason. A short note will save you from guessing, and it helps the next person too.

Administration and technical guides

Administrators have their own shelf. One guide explains permission sets, security groups and how to test access. Another shows how to copy production into a sandbox and when to refresh it. Both suit the person who runs the system each day.

A version guide explains release waves and how to read a version number. Upgrade steps show how to move an old install forward. A short tutorial introduces AL extensions for readers who want to see how developers build changes. Best practices lists habits that keep a system tidy.

Make small changes, one at a time. Test each one in the sandbox. Then write down what you did. If something breaks, you will know which change caused it, and you can undo it fast.

Questions

Questions about our Business Central guides

Who writes these Business Central guides?

Our consultants write them from the setup and support work they do during US business hours. Before we publish a guide, we check it against a current Business Central sandbox. Each one also links to the matching Microsoft Learn article for the official reference. So you get practical steps from us and the full detail from Microsoft in one place.

Do the guides apply to Business Central on-premises?

Most steps stay the same, because the application pages match. Differences appear in administration. Environments and updates work differently, and some cloud-only features, such as certain Copilot functions, are not there. Where a guide depends on the online service, we say so in the text. If you run on-premises, read the admin guides with that in mind.

Can I follow a guide in my live company?

Try it in a sandbox first. A sandbox copy of production lets you post, reverse and repeat without touching real ledgers. Once the steps work, repeat them in the live company with the same data. That habit saves clean-up work later, and it costs very little extra effort.

Are the guides kept current with new releases?

Microsoft ships release waves each year, and page names or layouts sometimes change. We update a guide when a change affects its steps. If a screen looks different from the description, use the search box to find the page by name. The feature usually still exists, just with a new label or a new place in the menu.

What if my question is not covered by a guide?

Send it through the contact page. Short questions often become the next guide. If the answer depends on your own setup, one of our consultants can look at it with you on a screen share. Then we explain the options in plain words, so your team can choose the next step.
