How the planning worksheet in Business Central runs MPS and MRP

The planning worksheet in Business Central is the manufacturer's planning page. It works out what to make, buy, assemble and transfer across every bill of material level. Then a planner accepts the suggestions and creates the orders. This guide explains the two calculation types, the MPS and MRP options, the warnings and the settings that keep the plan stable.

🏭What it plans

What the planning worksheet in Business Central covers

The requisition worksheet stops at purchases and transfers. The planning worksheet adds production and assembly. It starts from demand for finished goods and explodes the production bill of materials. Then it works down level by level. So components and raw materials get planned against the orders that will consume them.

Production orders belong to the Premium license, so this page matters most to Premium customers. It suggests planned or firm planned production orders, purchase orders for bought components, assembly orders and transfers between locations. It dates all of them backwards from the due date of the finished item, using routing times and lead times.

🔁Two methods

Regenerative plan and net change plan in the planning worksheet

Calculate Regenerative Plan starts from nothing. It deletes earlier suggestions for the filtered items and rebuilds the whole plan. That makes it the right choice after large changes, or as a regular full run. On a big item list it takes longer. So many plants schedule it outside the working day.

In the planning worksheet in Business Central, Calculate Net Change Plan looks only at items whose demand or supply changed since the last run. A new sales order or an edited bill of materials is an example. It is quicker and suits a mid-day refresh. Both methods ask for an order date and an ending date. Those dates set how far ahead to plan.

🧮The options

Choosing MPS, MRP or both in the planning worksheet in Business Central

The request page has two toggles. MPS plans items with direct demand from sales orders and forecasts. It gives you a master production schedule for finished goods. MRP plans the dependent demand underneath, meaning the components that those production orders need. If you run MPS first, a planner can settle the schedule before material suggestions appear.

Many smaller manufacturers tick both and plan in one pass. That is simpler, and it works well when the schedule rarely needs manual smoothing. You can include a demand forecast by name, and blanket sales orders also count as demand. What matters is to choose one routine and keep to it every cycle.

✔️Acting on lines

Warnings, action messages and creating orders

Lines may carry a warning. Emergency means a problem before the planning start date, such as negative inventory. Exception means projected stock falls below safety stock. Attention flags an unusual setup. Business Central does not pre-accept lines with warnings. So the planner must look at them before anything is created.

For the rest, tick Accept Action Message and run Carry Out Action Message. You choose whether production orders arrive as planned or firm planned. You also choose whether purchase lines become orders directly, or move to a requisition worksheet for the buyers. Order Tracking shows the demand behind any line.

⚖️Tuning

Keeping the planning worksheet in Business Central calm

A plan that changes every run is hard to follow. Set Planning Flexibility to None on an order line, and the system leaves that order alone. The dampener period and dampener quantity suppress trivial reschedule and quantity messages. The lot accumulation period groups demand, so the system does not split orders needlessly.

Accurate master data does the rest. Keep bills of materials current. Give routings realistic run times. Add scrap where it applies, and keep low-level codes up to date. If your planners export the worksheet to a spreadsheet and plan there, the setup needs attention. We are happy to help.

Questions

Planner questions on the planning worksheet in Business Central

Do I need the Premium license for the planning worksheet in Business Central?

The planning worksheet ties to manufacturing, and production orders, bills of materials and routings sit in Premium. Companies on Essentials plan purchased and transferred items with the requisition worksheet. That page uses the same planning engine, so the logic feels familiar if you upgrade later.

How often should we run a regenerative plan?

It depends on how fast demand changes. A common routine is a full regenerative run on a fixed schedule, with net change runs in between. What matters most is that planners act on the results before the next run. Write the routine down, so a holiday does not break it.

What does an Emergency warning mean?

It means the system found a problem dated before the planning start. Projected negative inventory and a due date in the past are typical cases. Planning proposes an emergency order to correct it and leaves the line unaccepted for the planner. So a person always decides what happens next.

Can the planning worksheet plan without a forecast?

Yes. It plans from actual demand, such as sales orders, production components and transfers. A forecast is optional. It helps when lead times are longer than the notice customers give. Then your team orders materials ahead of firm orders.

What is the difference between planned and firm planned production orders?

A planned production order is a proposal. The next regenerative run may delete or replace it. A firm planned order stays in place, and you adjust it only through action messages. Releasing it afterwards sends it to the shop floor. Firm up an order once you commit to it.
