Business Central consultant for manufacturers: discrete, process and job shop plants

A Business Central consultant for manufacturers has to understand the plant as well as the ledger. This page is our overview of manufacturing in Business Central, for assemblers and process plants alike. We set it up so the whole chain lives in one system. That means the sales order, its materials, the production order and the cost in finance.

🏭Which kind of plant

How a Business Central consultant for manufacturers fits your plant

Manufacturing in Business Central splits into two broad kinds of plant. Discrete manufacturers build countable products from parts. They use bills of materials, routings and work centers. Process manufacturers mix, blend or cook to a formula in batches. Our discrete manufacturing and process manufacturing pages go deep on each.

Within either kind, a job shop that quotes one-off parts needs a different setup from a plant that runs repeat products for stock. An assembler that builds kits from bought-in parts needs a third. We walk the floor first. Then we choose production orders, assembly orders or simple kitting for each product family. So the system stays light where your work is simple.

Common setups
  • ✓Discrete: BOMs, routings and work centers
  • ✓Process: formulas and batches
  • ✓Production orders for multi-step work
  • ✓Assembly orders for kits
  • ✓Subcontracted operations on routings
🔗Connected flow

From customer order to shipped goods in one flow

Sales can check availability and promise a date against planned production. They no longer guess. Once an order is confirmed, planning suggests the production and purchase orders it needs. Buyers then see which shortages really threaten a ship date.

When the goods are finished and shipped, the invoice, the stock movement and the cost of goods post together. So finance no longer rebuilds the month from shop-floor paperwork. A Business Central consultant for manufacturers makes sure each step hands over cleanly to the next.

One flow covers
  • ✓Promise dates on quotes and orders
  • ✓Make and buy suggestions
  • ✓Purchase orders for shortages
  • ✓Output and consumption posting
  • ✓Shipment, invoice and cost together
🔍Quality and traceability

Lot tracking and quality checks that stand up to an audit

Item tracking records which lot or serial number went into which finished item. The item tracing page follows it forward to customers or backward to suppliers. That is the answer a customer wants the day a batch of raw material turns out to be faulty.

Business Central does not include a full quality management module. For inspection plans, test results and non-conformance workflows, we set up a quality app from Microsoft's marketplace or a small extension. We size it to what your customers actually require.

  • ✓Lot and serial numbers on receipt
  • ✓Consumption per production order
  • ✓Forward and backward tracing
  • ✓Blocking a suspect lot
  • ✓Quality apps where needed

Product costs your controller can trust

Standard cost suits repeat products and shows variances clearly. Average or FIFO cost suits other lines. We set the costing method for each item. Then we roll material, labor and overhead up through the bill of materials and routing. We also explain each variance account to your controller.

Month-end then becomes a check and not a rebuild. You adjust cost, post inventory cost to the ledger and reconcile inventory value to the balance sheet. The standard reports do the rest.

🛠On the floor

Shop-floor recording that operators will actually use

Operators report output, scrap and time against production orders. They use shared terminals with a simple page, or a data capture app. Supervisors see progress without walking the floor with a clipboard.

Some plants need detailed machine scheduling or full shop-floor system features. In that case, a Business Central consultant for manufacturers should say so plainly. We help you choose a specialist app. We do not stretch standard Business Central past what it does well.

Questions

Questions for a Business Central consultant for manufacturers

What does a Business Central consultant for manufacturers do?

A consultant designs how Business Central runs your plant. That means which products use production orders or assembly orders, and how planning, purchasing, costing and quality fit together. It also means how shop-floor data reaches finance. Then the consultant sets it up, loads your data and trains your team. So you go live with a system that fits your floor and your people.

Is Business Central a good fit for manufacturing?

For many small and mid-sized discrete makers, yes. Bills of materials, routings, production orders, planning and costing are standard. Process plants, and plants that need finer scheduling, often add a specialist app. We check your products and your volumes early. So you know before you buy where the standard product fits and where an add-on will be needed.

How is this different from your MRP service?

This page covers the whole manufacturing business in Business Central, from quote to cost of goods. The MRP service goes deep on the planning engine itself. That means bills of materials, routings, capacity and reorder policies. So start here for the big picture. Then move to the MRP page when you want to tune how the plan itself works.

Which Business Central license do manufacturers need?

Production orders, routings and capacity planning are part of the Premium license. Assembly orders are available in Essentials. We look at who needs which license before you buy anything. Office staff and operators often need different types. So we count users by role and match each one to the lightest license that does the job.

Can we keep our existing shop-floor tools?

Often, yes. Business Central has APIs. So a data capture or machine monitoring system can send output and time into production orders. You do not have to replace it. We map what each tool owns and what flows across. That way operators keep the screens they know, and finance still gets one clean set of cost figures.
