Year end in Business Central: how to close the fiscal year
A Business Central year end close has three parts. First, finish the normal period-end work for the last month. Next, close the fiscal year on the Accounting Periods page. Then run the Close Income Statement batch job to move the net result to retained earnings. You can still post late adjustments, so the order of steps matters.

What to finish before a Business Central year end close
Year end starts as a normal month end. Post outstanding sales and purchase documents and apply payments. Reconcile every bank account. Run Adjust Cost - Item Entries and post inventory cost to the general ledger. Then calculate depreciation and post accruals. The subledgers should match their control accounts before you go on.
Next, add the annual items. Count stock and post the adjustments. Confirm fixed asset additions and disposals, agree intercompany balances and book any audit adjustments you already know. In the United States, check vendor 1099 settings while the payments are fresh. Also make sure the next fiscal year exists, using Create Year.

Close the fiscal year in Accounting Periods
Search for Accounting Periods and choose Close Year. Business Central finds the earliest open fiscal year and asks you to confirm. After that, the periods in that year show as Closed and Date Locked. So you can no longer change the period start dates, and you cannot reopen the year.
This step is smaller than it sounds. It posts nothing, and it does not block posting into the closed year. Entries posted there later are simply flagged as posted to a closed fiscal year. To stop users posting into old dates, set Allow Posting From in General Ledger Setup and User Setup.
Ask about posting dates →- ✓Marks periods Closed
- ✓Locks period dates
- ✓Cannot be undone
- ✓Posts no entries
- ✓Still permits late postings
Run the Close Income Statement batch job
Next, search for Close Income Statement. Enter the Fiscal Year Ending Date and choose a general journal template and batch for the lines. Give a document number and select the Retained Earnings Acc. You can close by business unit and by chosen dimensions, which carries that detail into retained earnings.
The job does not post. It fills your journal with lines that zero every income statement account and move the net amount to retained earnings. These lines carry a closing date, shown with a C before the last day of the year. That date sits between the last day and the first day of the new year.

Post the closing entries and check the result
Open the journal batch and post. Because of the closing date, reports for the final month still show normal income and expense. Reports that include closing entries show the income statement accounts at zero. The trial balance for the new year then opens with balance sheet accounts only.
Check three things. Retained earnings should move by the net income on the annual income statement. Every income statement account should be zero when closing entries are included. And the opening balance sheet for the new year should balance. Finally, file the journal register with your year-end papers.
Confirm your results together →- ✓Retained earnings movement
- ✓Income accounts at zero
- ✓Opening balance sheet balances
- ✓Closing register saved
- ✓Posting dates restricted
Late adjustments after a Business Central year end close
Auditors often send adjustments after the books are closed. First, widen the allowed posting dates for the person who makes the entry. Then post the adjustment with a date in the closed year, and narrow the dates again. Business Central accepts the entry and marks it as belonging to a closed year.
After that, run Close Income Statement again for the same year end. It creates lines only for the new difference. Posting them brings retained earnings up to date. You can repeat this as often as you need. If your first close in Business Central is near, our consultants can sit with your team for it.

Questions about the Business Central year end close
Can we post to the prior year after closing it?
Yes. Closing the year does not block posting. If the posting date range in General Ledger Setup or User Setup allows it, the entry posts and is flagged as made in a closed year. Then run Close Income Statement again to update retained earnings. So a late audit entry never needs a rebuilt Business Central year end close.
Must we finish a Business Central year end close before the new year?
No. You can post in the new year as soon as its accounting periods exist. Many companies trade for a while in the new year while the old one is being finalized. But opening retained earnings stays incomplete until you post the closing entries. So plan the close early, and keep your reports clear about which figures are final.
What is a closing date?
It is a special posting date, written with a C in front of the last day of the fiscal year. It lets closing entries sit after the final normal day and before the new year. As a result, ordinary reports for the last month stay clean. You pick whether a report includes closing entries when you run it.
Can a closed fiscal year be reopened?
No. You cannot reverse the Close Year action. That matters less than it seems, because posting into the closed year stays possible. What you cannot change afterward is the structure of the accounting periods in that year. So check the period setup before you choose Close Year, and ask your auditor if anything looks unusual.
Should the closing entries be split by dimension?
If you report equity by department, fund or business unit, select those dimensions in the batch job. Then the closing entries carry them. Otherwise one summarized entry per account is simpler. Decide once and apply the same choice every year. That keeps your Business Central year end close consistent and easy for auditors to follow.
