Business Central blanket orders for long-running agreements

Business Central blanket orders record an agreement to sell or buy a total quantity at agreed terms, delivered in several shipments over time. Each release becomes a normal order while the blanket keeps track of what remains. We set up the process on the sales and purchasing sides and show your team how to use it.

📃The agreement

What Business Central blanket orders are for

A blanket order is a framework, not a delivery instruction. It holds the customer or vendor, the items, the total quantity and the agreed price. Nobody ships or receives from the blanket itself. It stays open as long as the agreement runs.

When a delivery comes due, you enter the quantity on the line. Then you make a regular order from it. The blanket shows how much you released, shipped and invoiced. You can also split lines by date. That works well when you know the schedule.

Blanket sales orders and call-offs

Blanket sales orders suit customers who commit to an annual volume. They call off deliveries as they need them. The blanket holds the agreed price. So later price list changes do not touch releases. Each release becomes an ordinary sales order.

You can also create a sales order directly. Then link it by entering the blanket order number on the line. This helps when orders arrive through EDI or a web shop. We configure that link and check how it behaves with your order sources. We also add list views that show remaining commitment per customer.

Blanket purchase orders with vendors in Business Central

On the buying side, a blanket purchase order records a volume commitment to a vendor. In return, you get better terms. Buyers create purchase orders from it when stock runs low. They see at once how much of the commitment is left.

This matters when you hold contract pricing on raw materials or packaging. We set up the blanket and show how purchase orders from planning tie back to it. We also build a simple report of commitments by vendor. Purchasing managers can then see exposure before the next negotiation.

How blanket orders and planning work together

The planning engine can read open blanket sales lines as expected demand. This works much like a forecast. Real sales orders consume that demand once you link them. So purchasing and production see early the volumes a customer has agreed to.

This behavior needs care. Dates on blanket lines must be realistic. Otherwise planning suggests supply too early. We go through the interaction with your planner. Then we decide whether blankets or a demand forecast should drive supply for each product group. We test the outcome in the planning worksheet.

Mistakes to avoid with blanket orders in Business Central

The common failure is staff who enter orders separately and skip the link. The blanket then shows a full quantity still open. Another failure is an old agreement that has ended but stays in the list. It quietly feeds planning with demand that will not arrive. Both are easy to prevent.

We add a short periodic check. It lists open blankets by age and remaining quantity. A named owner closes those that are finished. We also show users the difference between a blanket, a quote and a plain order. Choosing the wrong document is where most confusion begins.

Questions

Business Central blanket orders questions

How are Business Central blanket orders different from a sales quote?

A quote is an offer the customer has not yet accepted and becomes one order. A blanket order is an accepted agreement. It produces many orders over time and keeps a running count of what you released and what remains.

Can I post a shipment directly from a blanket order?

No. Blanket orders are not posted. You enter the quantity for the next delivery, make an order from the blanket, and ship and invoice that order as usual. The blanket updates when you post the linked order.

Does the price on a blanket order stay fixed?

Each order you make from the blanket copies its price and discount, so the agreed terms carry through. If you renegotiate terms, update the blanket line and later releases use the new values.

Can an existing order join Business Central blanket orders?

Yes. Enter the blanket order number and line on the sales or purchase order line, and the agreement counts that quantity. That ties back orders from EDI, a web shop or planning.

Do blanket orders reserve stock?

No. A blanket order does not reserve inventory. It can inform planning as expected demand, but stock commits only when you create a regular order. If a customer needs stock held, reservation on the order is the tool for that.
