Business Central for packaging companies, from quote to pallet

Business Central for packaging companies manages made-to-order boxes, films, labels and containers next to the stock lines you resell. Most packaging is made for one customer, ordered again and again and called off in parts. Material is bought in rolls or sheets and sold in pieces. So we set up items, production and orders to match that pattern.

📦Customer-specific items

Customer-specific products and specifications

A carton printed for one customer is useless to another. So each design is its own item. Item templates make new ones quick. Item attributes hold the spec, such as size, board grade, flute, print colors and closure. Attributes are searchable, so a planner can find every item that runs on the same material.

We store the customer's own part number as an item reference and print it on documents. Artwork files, drawings and sign-off records attach to the item card or link from SharePoint. When a design changes, a new item or a new BOM version with a start date keeps old and new stock apart.

🏗Making it

BOMs and routings in Business Central for packaging companies

Converting and printing use the manufacturing features of Premium. The production BOM lists board, film or resin, inks, glue and outer packing for each quantity. It also holds a scrap allowance for trim and setup waste. The routing lists steps such as printing, die cutting, gluing and bundling, each on a work center or machine center.

Setup time matters, because changeovers are frequent. So routing lines carry setup and run time apart. That makes the cost of a short run clear. Capacity load then reflects reality. Similar items can share a routing, and you post output in pieces while board is used by sheet or weight.

🧻Rolls and sheets

Roll, sheet and weight-based stock

Paper, board and film arrive by weight or by roll. You use them by area or sheet. Units of measure set the conversion. Lot tracking can treat each roll as its own lot, so you know its supplier and what is left. Part rolls that come back from the machine go back into stock on the same lot.

Some conversions change roll by roll, because actual weight differs from nominal. Those are harder. Standard Business Central assumes one fixed factor per unit. If you invoice or cost on actual weight, a catch weight add-on handles both quantities well. We raise that early, instead of forcing a workaround.

🧾Call-off orders

How do blanket orders work for packaging companies?

Packaging buyers often commit to a yearly volume and call it off in deliveries. A blanket sales order holds the agreed quantity and price. Each release becomes a normal sales order drawn from it. The remaining balance stays in view. Planning can treat the blanket order as forecast demand.

That lets you make an efficient run, hold the finished goods and ship on request. You can report stock made for one customer by item. That helps when you talk about aging stock the customer agreed to take. Pallet quantities are a unit of measure, so shipping papers come out clean.

🧮Quoting jobs

Where Business Central for packaging companies needs an add-on

Quoting a new box means working out how many blanks fit on a sheet. It also means tooling and how run length changes unit cost. Business Central can cost a BOM and routing once they exist. But it has no built-in layout calculator. Firms that quote many new designs usually pair it with an estimating tool.

Finite scheduling is a similar case. Standard capacity planning shows load per work center. A visual scheduling add-on sets the order of jobs to cut changeovers. We set up the core first. Then we add only the specialist tools that your quote and job volume justifies.

Questions

Questions about Business Central for packaging companies

Can Business Central handle make-to-order and make-to-stock together?

Yes. Each item has its own replenishment and manufacturing policy. Customer-specific cartons can be made to order. Standard stock lines follow a reorder policy. The planning worksheet handles both in one planning run. So a planner sees the whole picture at once. We set the policy item by item with your production lead.

We also resell packaging supplies. Does that fit?

Yes. Tape, stretch wrap and stock boxes are ordinary bought items with their own price lists and reorder rules. Made and resold lines share customers, orders, warehouse and invoices. So a customer gets one delivery and one invoice. Business Central for packaging companies handles both sides in one system.

How are cutting dies and printing plates managed?

You can set up tooling as fixed assets for accounting. You can also name it on the routing, so operators know which die or plate to use. If you charge a customer for tooling, it goes on the first sales order as a line posted to its own income account. We agree that setup with your accountant first.

Can Business Central for packaging companies handle call-offs at an agreed price?

Yes. Blanket sales orders hold the agreed quantity and price. Each call-off creates a sales order from the blanket order. Staff see at a glance how much of the deal has shipped and what remains. That keeps sales, planning and the warehouse working from the same number.

Does Business Central for packaging companies track waste?

Yes. You can plan scrap as an allowance on BOM and routing lines. You then record actual scrap when you post output. Comparing expected and actual use on finished production orders shows where material use is drifting. So you can fix a problem early, before it eats the margin on a job.
