Plan ahead with Business Central demand forecasting

Business Central demand forecasting records the amounts you expect to sell or use by item, location and period. Planning then suggests the purchase and production orders needed to meet them. We set up the forecast and decide how you maintain it. We tune the planning settings around it. Then we show your planners how forecast and real orders combine.

🔮Why forecast

What Business Central demand forecasting changes

Without a forecast, planning reacts only to orders in the system and to reorder points. That works when supplier lead times are short. But suppose a component takes a long time to arrive. Waiting for the sales order then means you order the material too late.

A forecast gives planning something to act on. It states likely demand ahead of time. So you order long lead time items early. As real sales orders arrive, they use up the forecast for their period. Planning works from whichever is greater, so demand is not counted twice.

A forecast helps when
  • ✓Supplier lead times are long
  • ✓Demand is seasonal
  • ✓Customers order at short notice
  • ✓Stockouts cost sales
  • ✓Excess stock ties up cash
📈How it works

How Business Central demand forecasting works

The Demand Forecast page is a matrix of items against periods. You choose to view by day, week, month or longer. You can filter by location and type amounts or import them. A sales item forecast states expected sales of a finished product. A component forecast states independent demand for a part.

You can keep several forecasts under separate names. A setting names the one that planning reads. When the planning worksheet calculates a plan, forecast amounts not yet used by sales orders appear as demand. The engine then suggests supply to cover them, based on each item's reordering policy.

Building the numbers for Business Central demand forecasting

The system stores the forecast, but people or tools produce it. Sales history by item and month is the simplest source. We build an Excel workbook or Power BI view from posted sales. Planners use it to prepare numbers. Then we load them with Edit in Excel or a configuration package.

Business Central also has the Sales and Inventory Forecast extension. It uses Azure AI to predict item sales from history. It also flags likely stockouts on the item card. But the extension never writes into the demand forecast. So we show you how to use the two side by side.

Tuning planning around Business Central demand forecasting

A forecast only helps if the planning settings around it are sound. So we go through lead times, safety stock and lot sizes. We also check order multiples and the reordering policy for each item group. We also set the time bucket and dampener settings. These stop planning from proposing a change every time a date moves slightly.

Then we calculate a plan in a sandbox, using your forecast and open orders. We sit with your planners while they read the suggestions. Lines that look wrong often trace to one parameter or one bad date. We fix the cause and recalculate. We repeat until the worksheet suggests what an experienced planner would order.

  • ✓Safety stock quantity
  • ✓Lot size and multiples
  • ✓Dampener settings
  • ✓Forecast consumption by location
🧭What is delivered

What Business Central demand forecasting delivers, and its limits

You receive a forecast process with a named owner and a template for preparing numbers. You also get a loaded forecast and a planning worksheet that gives usable suggestions. We agree a monthly rhythm: update the forecast, run the plan and act on the messages. We add a report that compares forecast with real sales. Then you can track how close you are.

The limits are worth stating. The demand forecast is a place to hold numbers, not a statistical engine. It plans with the planning worksheet, which is part of Premium. So companies on Essentials rely on reorder policies and the requisition worksheet. Businesses that need advanced statistical models often add a specialist forecasting product.

Questions

Business Central demand forecasting questions

Does Business Central create the demand forecast for us?

No. You enter or import those amounts yourself. The separate Sales and Inventory Forecast extension does predict item sales from history, using Azure AI. Many companies use that prediction as one input when they prepare the forecast. So the extension helps, but a planner still owns the final numbers.

What happens to the forecast when real sales orders come in?

Sales orders use up the forecast for the same item and period. Planning then covers the actual orders plus whatever forecast remains. This stops planning from buying for both the forecast and the orders that fulfill it. As a result, your purchase suggestions stay in line with real demand.

Can we keep separate forecasts for each warehouse?

Yes. Forecast entries can carry a location code. A setup option then tells planning to treat the forecast per location. That suits companies whose sites serve different customers. Where sites share stock freely, a single company-wide forecast is often simpler. We help you pick the one that fits your sites.

Do we need Premium to use demand forecasts?

The demand forecast feeds the planning worksheet. That belongs to the manufacturing and planning capabilities in Premium. Essentials companies can still use reorder points, the requisition worksheet and the Sales and Inventory Forecast extension. We check your license before we suggest an approach. That way you pay only for what you use.

How far ahead should we forecast?

Far enough to cover your longest lead time in total, from ordering raw parts to shipping the final item. Forecasting far beyond that adds effort without changing any order you place today. We work out the horizon per item group from your own lead times. Then Business Central demand forecasting stays useful and light.
