Business Central bank feeds that import statements for you

Business Central bank feeds connect a bank account in the system to your online bank. New statement lines then arrive on their own, so nobody downloads and uploads files by hand. We link the accounts and set the import schedule. Then we tune the matching rules. Your accounting team ends up with a short daily routine they can trust.

🏦What it is

What Business Central bank feeds do

A bank feed is a link between a bank account card in Business Central and the same account at your bank. Once linked, the system fetches new transactions. It places them in the payment reconciliation journal, ready to apply to open customer and vendor entries.

Microsoft delivers the standard feed through the Envestnet Yodlee Bank Feeds service. It is offered in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Where that service does not reach a bank, statement files or a banking add-on fill the gap. We say which route fits before any setup starts.

Feed basics
  • ✓Link made on bank account card
  • ✓Transactions fetched on a schedule
  • ✓Lines land in the reconciliation journal
  • ✓Sign-in handled by the bank
  • ✓One link per bank account
⏱When to start

Signs that manual statement import has run its course

The usual trigger is volume. Someone logs in to several banks each morning. They export a file for each account and import them one by one. Then the task starts to slip. Cash receipts are applied late because nobody has seen the deposit yet. Small delays add up.

A second trigger is a month end that starts with a backlog. Suppose the team matches the statement only once a month. Then every unknown line has to be traced long after the event. A daily feed turns that pile into a handful of lines. Staff handle them while the details are still fresh.

  • ✓Month-end matching backlog
  • ✓Card and lockbox deposits
  • ✓New entity or new bank
🔗How we work

How we set up Business Central bank feeds

We begin in a sandbox with one account. We link it to the online bank and switch on automatic statement import. Then we agree how far back the first import should reach. That way, opening entries do not come in twice. One account proves the approach before the rest follow.

Next, we tune the matching. Payment application rules decide how sure a match must be. Text-to-account mapping sends recurring lines, such as bank charges or interest, straight to the right ledger account. We test with your real statement lines. Only then do we link anything in the live company.

📦What you get

What your team has when the work is done

You receive working feeds for each account in scope. You also get a written note of every mapping rule and why it exists. A one-page routine is there for the person who opens the journal each morning. It covers applying and posting. It also says what to do with a line the system could not place.

We also sit with your team for the first live cycle on a screen share during US business hours. We answer questions that come up with real lines on the spot. If a rule misfires, we correct it in the same session. Your team has nothing to guess.

⚠️Watch for

Problems with Business Central bank feeds and how to avoid them

Feeds break quietly. A bank changes its sign-in steps, or a password expires. The link stops, and nobody notices until the journal has been empty for a while. So we show your administrator where to check the link and how to refresh it. A quick weekly glance is enough.

The other trap is duplication. Someone imports a file by hand for a period that the feed already covered. One clear rule about who imports what prevents most of it. So does a habit of checking the statement ending balance. Loose matching rules that post wrong applications are the third problem, and testing settles that.

Avoid these
  • ✓Expired bank sign-in
  • ✓Duplicate imported periods
  • ✓Matching rules set too loose
  • ✓Unmapped recurring charges
  • ✓No owner for the journal
Questions

Business Central bank feeds questions

Which banks work with Business Central bank feeds?

The standard feed uses the Envestnet Yodlee service. It covers a very large list of banks in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The quickest test is to search for your bank while you link an account in a sandbox. We can do that with you on a call. Then you know the answer before you plan anything else.

What if my bank is not supported?

You still have options. Business Central imports statement files through data exchange definitions. AppSource connectors also exist for direct bank links. We compare those routes against your bank and account types. Then we recommend the one with the least manual handling. We explain the trade-offs in plain words, so your finance lead can choose with confidence.

Does a Business Central bank feed post transactions by itself?

No. The feed imports lines and proposes applications. A person posts the journal. That keeps a human decision between the bank and your ledger. Most finance leads and auditors prefer that. It still removes the download and upload steps. So staff spend their time on the lines that need a decision.

Is a bank feed the same as bank reconciliation?

They are related but not the same. The feed is how statement lines get into Business Central. Reconciliation is the control that proves the ledger and the statement agree. Our bank reconciliation guide covers that second step in detail. We set up both, so the feed output flows into a clean reconciliation.

Can one feed serve several companies?

Each bank account card has its own link, and each company in Business Central has its own bank accounts. For a group, we repeat the setup for each company. We also keep the mapping rules consistent. That way, people who move between entities see the same behavior.
