Business Central for oil and gas operators and service firms
Business Central for oil and gas works best as the finance and operations core for oilfield service firms, midstream contractors and smaller operators. It handles costs by well, job or ticket, yard and truck stock, equipment and several legal entities. Joint interest billing and revenue distribution usually need an add-on. We say so up front.

Job costing in Business Central for oil and gas work
Most oilfield money questions come down to one thing. What did this well, pad or field ticket cost, and what did we bill for it? So the Projects module answers that. Then each job has tasks, planning lines for the budget and ledger entries for actual labor, materials, equipment time and third-party charges.
We set projects up to match how your crews already talk about work. For example, you can run one project per well, with a task for each service line. Purchase invoices, item use and time sheets post to the task. So a supervisor can compare budget and actual before the invoice goes to the operator.

- ✓Rental and owned equipment
- ✓Chemicals and consumables used
- ✓Subcontractor and hauling invoices

Yard, truck and customer-site stock
Service companies hold stock in yards, on trucks and sometimes at the customer's site. Locations in Business Central stand for each of those places. Also, transfer orders move goods between them and show what is in transit. First, serial numbers follow tools and high-value parts. Lot numbers follow chemicals and fluids.
Reorder rules on stockkeeping units keep each yard supplied. Nobody has to watch a spreadsheet. When a field crew uses parts, the use posts to the project from the truck location. So stock value and job cost move together, and month-end counts hold fewer surprises.
Ask about field inventory →- ✓One location per yard
- ✓Truck stock as locations
- ✓Serial tracking for tools
- ✓Lot tracking for chemicals
- ✓Reorder points per yard
Rigs, pumps and fleet as fixed assets
Pumps, compressors, trailers and trucks sit in Fixed Assets. Each one has its own depreciation book, class and location. Also, you can record maintenance costs against each asset. That way you see when a unit costs more to keep running than it earns. You can also track insurance cover per asset in the same module.
Business Central does not plan preventive maintenance by engine reading out of the box. Where that matters, we either use Service Management in Premium or connect a maintenance add-on. We explain the trade-off before you choose.
Discuss your equipment records →- ✓Depreciation book and method
- ✓Maintenance cost history
- ✓Insurance coverage
- ✓Responsible yard or district
- ✓Disposal and sale entries
Where oil and gas needs more than standard Business Central
Operators with working interest partners need joint interest billing, revenue distribution to owners and tracking for authorization for expenditure. But those are not standard Business Central features. Several publishers offer AppSource solutions built for upstream accounting. A company with many partners per well should plan for one from the start.
Field ticketing is a similar case. Crews often capture tickets on a tablet in a dedicated app. The ticket then flows into Business Central as a project journal or a sales invoice. We map that link so nobody retypes a ticket. The signed copy also stays attached to the invoice.
Check your fit with us →- ✓Joint interest billing
- ✓Revenue distribution to owners
- ✓Expenditure authorization tracking
- ✓Mobile field ticketing
- ✓Meter-based maintenance scheduling
Multi-entity finance for oil and gas groups
Energy groups often run an operating company, a service company and a holding entity. Then each becomes a company in Business Central. Intercompany postings cover shared crews and equipment. Also, consolidation gives the group view. Dimensions such as district, basin, service line and customer give the cuts that managers ask for.
Commodity swings make cash visibility important. Reports by district and Power BI dashboards on receivables, work in progress and equipment use give owners and lenders a current picture. We build them around the questions your bank and partners already send you every quarter.

Business Central for oil and gas: common questions
Does Business Central for oil and gas handle joint interest billing?
Not in the standard product. Joint interest billing, owner revenue distribution and division of interest records come from industry add-ons that run inside Business Central. We help you compare the AppSource options against your partner setup. Then we set up the one you pick alongside the core finance work.
Is Business Central a good fit for oilfield service companies?
Often, yes. Service firms need job costing, equipment records, multi-location stock and quick invoicing from field tickets. The standard Projects, Fixed Assets and Inventory modules cover those well. The main design question is how tickets reach the system. We settle that early in the project, because it shapes everything after it.
Can we track costs by well and by AFE?
Yes for wells. A project per well, or a dimension value per well, gives cost and revenue at that level. You can hold a simple budget per authorization as project planning lines. But formal approval flows and partner reports on an authorization usually need an add-on. We tell you which parts are standard.
How does field ticket data get into Business Central for oil and gas?
First, most companies capture tickets in a mobile app. The app sends them through the Business Central API. Each ticket arrives as project journal lines or a draft sales invoice, with the signed document attached. We build and test that link in a sandbox before your crews depend on it.
We run an older package made for oil and gas. Can we move?
Yes. We go through what the current system does for you. Next, we separate the industry functions from general accounting. Then we show where each one will live afterward. After that, we move master data, open items and balances. Where you need it, history stays available for reference. This is how we plan a move to Business Central for oil and gas.
