Business Central catch weight for products sold by actual weight

Business Central catch weight lets you stock an item in one unit, such as cases or pieces. It prices and costs that item by the actual weight of each one. Standard Business Central assumes a fixed conversion between units. So true variable weight needs an add-on or extension. We help food companies choose one and set it up.

⚖️The concept

What catch weight means in practice

A case of chicken breasts is ordered as one case. Staff pick it as one case and count it as one case. Yet no two cases weigh the same, and the customer pays by the pound. So the system must hold two quantities for every movement: how many, and how heavy.

The weight gets captured, or caught, at a set moment. That is usually receiving, production output or picking. From then on, it travels with that case or lot. Invoices, cost of goods sold and inventory value use the caught weight. Meanwhile, warehouse tasks keep using the count.

Why standard Business Central falls short on catch weight

Item units of measure in Business Central use a fixed quantity per base unit. A case holds a set number of pounds. That works for packaged goods. It fails for anything that varies, because the invoice bills a nominal weight instead of what shipped.

Workarounds exist. Some companies stock in pounds and treat each case as a lot or package number with its own quantity. That can work at low volume. But picking, counting and ordering by the case get clumsy. It rarely survives a busy warehouse. We say honestly when a workaround is enough.

🧀Food solutions

Catch weight add-ons for Business Central catch weight needs

Several food-industry solutions built on Business Central add a second quantity field. It spans purchasing, inventory, production and sales. Each line then shows count and weight side by side. A tolerance range per item rejects an implausible weight at entry. So staff notice mistakes at once.

These products usually bring related food functions with them. Examples are lot attributes, shelf life rules, scale integration and pricing per weight unit. We compare them against your processes, not a feature checklist. An add-on that suits a meat processor may be more than a cheese distributor needs.

🧪Our delivery

How we implement Business Central catch weight

We follow a product from dock to invoice on your floor. We note every point where weight is known, estimated or re-measured. That walk decides where the system should capture weight. It also decides which documents must show it. Often it exposes steps where someone writes weight on paper and keys it later.

In a sandbox, we set up a small group of catch weight items. We connect a scale or a handheld scanner. Then we run purchase, production where relevant, picking and invoicing. Finance checks that inventory value and margin follow actual weight. Only then do we extend the item list.

🚨Watch closely

Where catch weight projects go wrong

Shrink is the quiet problem. Product loses moisture in storage. So the weight caught at receiving no longer matches the weight at shipping. Without a rule for re-weighing and posting the difference, inventory value drifts from reality. Margins then look better than they are.

Partial cases are the other problem. Once someone opens a case and sells by the piece, the remaining weight needs a fresh figure. We define how your team handles broken cases. We also define who may override a weight and how the system logs overrides. So daily exceptions do not undermine the data.

Questions

Business Central catch weight questions

Is Business Central catch weight included in the standard product?

No. Standard Business Central converts between units with a fixed factor and holds one quantity per entry. Variable weight per unit is provided by food-industry add-ons or a custom extension that adds a second quantity throughout the system.

Can we price by the pound and ship by the case?

Yes, with a catch weight solution in place. The sales order is entered in cases, the actual weight is captured at picking, and the invoice multiplies that weight by the price per pound. The customer sees both the case count and the billed weight.

How does catch weight affect inventory costing?

Cost is carried per weight unit, so the value of a case depends on what it actually weighs. That makes cost of goods sold and margin accurate per shipment, which a fixed conversion cannot achieve when weights vary meaningfully between cases.

Does Business Central catch weight work with lot traceability?

Not strictly. Your team can type weights or scan them from a label barcode that encodes weight. Connected scales remove keying errors and speed up busy lines. So most processors add them at production output and at the shipping dock.

Does catch weight work with lot traceability?

Yes, and the two belong together. Each lot, and often each case within it, carries its own weight. A recall query then returns both how many cases and how much weight went to each customer, which is what regulators and buyers ask for.
