Business Central for electronics manufacturers and assemblers

Business Central for electronics manufacturers is a sound choice when the hard problems are deep bills of materials, long lead times and serial numbers that follow a board into a product. We set it up for board assemblers, device makers and box-build shops. We also connect engineering tools where the standard product stops.

🔌Product structure

Deep bills of materials without the spreadsheet

An electronic product is a stack. Passives and chips sit on a board, and boards sit in a sub-assembly. Sub-assemblies go into an enclosure with cables, firmware and packaging. Production bills nest to any depth. Each level can be stocked or made to order. It can also be a phantom that planning passes straight through.

Versions with starting dates let a new board revision take over on a chosen day. Meanwhile, open orders finish on the old one. Reference designators and placement data are not standard fields. So we add them to the line with an extension. Or we leave them in the design system and link by part number.

Planning Business Central for electronics manufacturers around lead times

Component availability decides what you can ship, so Business Central for electronics manufacturers puts it first. Also, each item carries its vendor lead time, order multiple and minimum. The planning worksheet nets demand from sales orders and forecasts against stock and open purchases. It then proposes what to buy and when. Order multiples respect reel and tray quantities.

A part may go on allocation. Item substitutions then record the approved alternates, so a planner or buyer can swap on the order line. Item references hold each vendor's own part number against yours. A full approved manufacturer list with preference ranking for each part is add-on territory. We say so when it matters.

  • ✓Reel quantities as multiples

🏭Contract builds

Working with contract manufacturers and board houses

Many electronics firms design in house and have boards populated elsewhere. Subcontracting in Business Central ties the outside operation to a purchase order created from the routing. The subcontracting worksheet lists what is due to go out. You move consigned components to a location that stands for the partner's site.

That keeps your parts visible on your books while they sit on someone else's shelf. Receipt of finished boards then uses them up. For turnkey builds where the partner buys everything, a plain purchase item is simpler. We choose for each product line, since firms often run both models side by side.

🔎Unit history

Serial numbers from board to boxed product

You assign serial numbers at output. You scan them again when a board goes into a finished unit. That builds the parent and child link on its own. You capture date codes or supplier lots on sensitive components at receipt. One lookup then shows what sits inside a returned unit.

Returns and repairs run through sales return orders. When you repair customer units under warranty, service management in Premium handles it. Service items hold the serial number, warranty dates and repair history. Test results from the line stay in the test system. You reference them by serial number when someone needs them.

Where Business Central for electronics manufacturers connects to engineering

Design data lives in product lifecycle and design tools, so it should stay there. The job is to move a released bill of materials into Business Central without retyping. We build that with standard APIs. New items come from the release, the production BOM version gets written and the old version closes.

Engineering change approval and obsolescence monitoring are not standard features. For small teams, a disciplined version process is enough. Larger teams often add a lifecycle product. It links through an AppSource connector. We help you judge which side should own each field. That keeps Business Central for electronics manufacturers focused on what it does best.

Integration points
  • ✓Released BOM import
  • ✓Item creation from release
  • ✓Old version closed automatically
  • ✓Compliance data stays in design
  • ✓Obsolescence watch by add-on
Questions

Business Central for electronics manufacturers: questions asked

Can Business Central for electronics manufacturers handle a bill of materials with hundreds of lines?

Yes. Line count is not a practical limit. You can import bills from a spreadsheet or push them from a design system. Structure matters more. Good sub-assemblies make planning and costing easier than one flat list. We shape the structure with your engineers. Then the first import already matches how your team builds each product.

How does it deal with component shortages?

Availability views show which lines are short before release. Planning suggests expediting or rescheduling. You can choose substitute items on a component line. Sharing scarce parts across orders is a planner choice. The reservation function then locks it in. So a short part goes to the order that matters most, and everyone can see why.

Is Premium required for electronics assembly?

For production orders with routings, capacity and subcontracting, yes. A company that does light kitting or final configuration only can use assembly orders, which come with Essentials. We look at how you build before we recommend one. Some firms need both, for different product lines. We can set up the two side by side and keep the planning simple.

Can it track excess and obsolete stock?

Inventory reports show stock with no recent movement. Item attributes or categories can flag lifecycle status, such as active, last buy or obsolete. You post provisions through revaluation or a journal. An automated reserve calculation by age band is a small extension. We build it with your controller. The reserve then follows your policy.

Does it support configure-to-order products?

Assemble-to-order lets a salesperson change parts on the order line. Memory size is one example. A rules-based configurator is different. It checks combinations. It also builds the bill on its own. That is not standard and comes from an add-on. We first check how many options your products really have, then we advise.
