Business Central for cosmetics makers and beauty brands
Business Central for cosmetics gives a beauty brand one place for a range full of shades and sizes. It also covers the batches behind them, the contract fillers who make them and the stores and marketplaces that sell them. It suits brands that have outgrown spreadsheets and entry-level accounting. We set it up around launches, batches and channels.

Managing shades, sizes and launches in Business Central for cosmetics
A single lipstick may come in dozens of shades. A cream may come in several jar sizes. Item variants keep those under one item. So you maintain pricing, description and costing once. Stock, sales and barcodes still track by shade. Products that differ in formula or price work better as separate items grouped by item category.
Item attributes record searchable details such as finish, skin type or fragrance family. They also flow to the online store. For a launch, you prepare new items from an item template with the right posting groups and units. You hold them as blocked until the launch date. Then you release them together, so nothing sells early.

Formulas and batches in Business Central for cosmetics
Brands that mix and fill in house use the Premium license. A production BOM holds the formula with ingredients for each batch size. A second level covers filling bulk into jars or tubes with packaging components. Versions with starting dates record reformulations. So you can always match an older batch to the recipe used.
You can stock bulk product as its own item between mixing and filling. That suits a base that goes into many shades. However, formulas by weight fraction, or batches that adjust for ingredient strength, push past what the base application does comfortably. In that case, a process manufacturing add-on is the better route.

Batch codes and shelf life
The batch code printed on a jar is a lot number in Business Central. Lot tracking ties each finished batch to the ingredient lots that went into it. It also ties it to the customers who received it. If a complaint comes in, item tracing shows in moments which shipments carried that batch. It also shows how much remains in the warehouse.
Products with a limited shelf life carry an expiration date on the lot. You can set warehouse picks to take the earliest expiring stock first. Retailers often demand a minimum remaining life on delivery. Availability by lot and expiry lets customer service see what they can promise to those accounts.

Contract manufacturers and gift sets
Many brands never touch a mixing tank. When a contract manufacturer supplies finished goods, the process is a purchase order. You capture lot numbers at receipt. Perhaps you send packaging or ingredients to the filler. Then subcontracting on a production order, or a location for the filler's site, keeps your components visible while they sit there.
You build gift sets and seasonal bundles with assembly orders, which are part of the Essentials license. An assembly BOM lists the products, box and inserts. Assembling a set uses up the components and creates the set as stock. You can assemble sets to stock before a season, or to order as sales arrive.

Selling channels in Business Central for cosmetics
The built-in Shopify connector synchronizes items, variants, prices, stock levels, orders and customers between a Shopify store and Business Central. Sales price lists and customer discount groups serve wholesale accounts. Marketplace or retail chain orders typically arrive through an e-commerce connector or an EDI solution.
Ingredient declarations, safety documentation and regional product registrations are not standard features. Brands with heavy regulatory paperwork usually keep it in a product compliance tool and link the item number. We say where that line sits early. So nobody stretches the ERP into something it was never meant to be.

Business Central for cosmetics: questions from brands
Do we need Premium for Business Central for cosmetics if a contract manufacturer makes our products?
Usually not. If you buy finished goods, Essentials covers purchasing, lot tracking, warehousing, assembly of gift sets and sales. Premium becomes relevant when you run production orders yourself. It also matters when you manage subcontracted operations on your own bills of materials. We ask how your products are made before we name a license, so you do not pay for more than you need.
Should each shade be an item or a variant?
Variants work well when shades share price, cost and description. Separate items are better when you cost, price or report shades on their own. We decide for each product line, because changing the structure after go-live is awkward. A short look at your range at the start saves a lot of rework later, and it helps your online store stay tidy as the range grows.
Can Business Central keep our Shopify stock levels accurate?
Yes. The Shopify connector sends available inventory from chosen locations to the store. It also brings orders back automatically. You can keep stock reserved for wholesale in a separate location, so the store does not offer it online. That way a retail buyer's order is safe, and shoppers never buy units that are already promised to someone else.
How do we handle testers and free samples?
You normally set up testers as their own items with no sales price. You issue them through a sales order at zero value, or through a negative adjustment posted to a marketing expense account. Either way, the system records the stock movement and its cost. So you can see what testers and samples cost you each quarter, and plan the marketing budget with that figure.
Can we see margin by product line and channel?
Yes. Dimensions such as brand, product line and channel attach to sales and cost entries. Financial reports or Power BI break profit down by any combination. That requires you to design the dimensions before transactions start. We run that design with you early. Then every sale lands in the right place from the first day, with no clean-up later.
