Business Central for process manufacturing: formulas, batches and lots

Business Central for process manufacturing covers batch production, lot tracking, expiry dates and costing with standard features. It needs an add-on for true formula management, co-products and potency. We set up the Premium manufacturing features for firms that mix, blend, cook or fill to a formula. And we tell you early which needs call for a process manufacturing app. Assembled products have their own discrete manufacturing page.

🧪Batch production

Formulas and batches with standard production features

In standard Business Central a recipe is a production BOM. It holds ingredients, quantities per output unit and a scrap percentage. A routing lists the steps, such as weighing, mixing, holding and filling, with the work centers and times. A released production order for a batch draws both together.

Operators record what they used and made through consumption and output journals. When quantities are predictable, ingredients can flush on their own. Packaging is often a second level. The bulk product is a semi-finished item, and several pack sizes then use it.

⚗️Formula gaps

Where Business Central for process manufacturing needs a specialist app

The production BOM was designed for discrete assembly. So some process needs sit outside it. Formulas that scale with batch size, ingredients dosed by active strength and one batch giving several co-products are not standard. Neither is cost sharing between by-products.

Catch weight is another gap. That is when an item is stocked in cases but priced by actual weight. For these needs, we suggest a process manufacturing add-on that runs inside Business Central, not custom code. We help you test shortlisted AppSource solutions against your own recipes before you choose.

🔎Lot control

Lot tracing and expiry from supplier to customer

Process makers must say which raw material lots went into which finished batch, and where that batch shipped. Item tracking gives lot numbers at receipt and at output. The item tracing page then follows a lot forward to customers or backward to supplier receipts.

Expiry dates sit with the lot. Picking can follow first-expired-first-out, so older stock leaves first. You can block lots while you wait for test results. We set tracking rules per item, because a bulk solvent and a printed carton rarely need the same level of control.

⚖️Units

Units of measure for liquids, powders and packs

A process plant buys by the drum or ton, stores by the kilogram or liter and sells by the bottle or case. Each item has a base unit and conversion factors for the others. So a purchase in drums becomes stock in liters with no hand math. Sales in cases reduce bulk stock the right way.

Conversions that depend on density, or that vary lot to lot, need care. The standard conversion is one fixed factor per item. So we settle the base unit for every material with your production and buying teams at the start. Changing it after transactions exist is hard.

🧮Batch cost

Batch costing and planning for process manufacturing

Each finished batch collects the cost of ingredients used, labor and machine time from the routing, and overhead. With standard costing, variances show where a batch used more material or time than planned. With actual costing, the batch simply carries what it truly cost.

Planning works from forecasts and orders down through the BOM levels. It suggests production orders for bulk and purchase orders for ingredients, with their lead times and minimum quantities. Shelf life shapes the settings. So we tune reorder rules to avoid more short-dated stock than you can sell.

Questions

Business Central for process manufacturing: batch and formula questions

Is Business Central designed for process manufacturing?

Its manufacturing features were designed around discrete production. Even so, many process firms run well on them with lot tracking and multi-level BOMs. Firms with scalable formulas, potency or co-products add a process manufacturing app that runs inside Business Central. We check your recipes first, then tell you which path fits.

Which license gives you process manufacturing in Business Central?

Production BOMs, routings, production orders, planning and capacity belong to Premium. Essentials includes assembly orders. They can suit simple blending or kitting with no routing. We check which one your process needs before you buy. That way you avoid paying for more than your plant will use.

Can Business Central for process manufacturing hold a batch until tests pass?

Yes. You can block a lot, so nobody can sell or use it until release. You can keep tested stock in a separate location or bin. A quality app or extension records the test results themselves. So Business Central for process manufacturing holds the stock status, and the quality tool holds the proof.

How does Business Central for process manufacturing support a recall?

Item tracing starts from a lot number. It lists every finished batch that used the lot, and every shipment that held those batches, with customer and date. The same trace also runs backward. It goes from a customer complaint to the supplier receipt of each ingredient. So a recall becomes a quick query.

Can recipes change without losing the old version?

Yes. Production BOM versions carry a start date and a status. So a new recipe takes over from a set date, while earlier batches keep their link to the version they used. Routings have versions in the same way. That keeps your batch history clean for audits.
