Business Central vs Odoo: two different ideas of what an ERP should be

Business Central vs Odoo comes down to two philosophies. Odoo is a modular suite of business apps on an open source core, from the Belgian company Odoo S.A. Business Central is Microsoft's ERP for small and midsize firms, delivered as a managed cloud service. Odoo offers breadth and openness. Business Central offers accounting depth and a close tie to Microsoft 365.

📦What they are

Business Central vs Odoo: the products in brief

Odoo comes in two editions. Community is free, open source software, but Enterprise is a paid subscription. It adds more apps, features and official support. The app list is broad. It spans accounting, CRM, a website builder, ecommerce, point of sale, stock, manufacturing and human resources. Also, you can install each app on its own.

Business Central is a single application. Essentials has finance, sales, purchasing, stock, warehousing and projects. Premium adds manufacturing and service management. But it does not try to be a website builder or a human resources suite. Connected Microsoft or partner products meet those needs.

Hosting and responsibility

Odoo gives several hosting choices. Odoo Online is the vendor's own hosted service, and Odoo.sh is a platform for custom deployments. You can also install either edition on your own servers. Self-hosting brings freedom, but security patches, backups and version upgrades then fall to you.

Microsoft operates BC online. It handles infrastructure, backups and updates, including two release waves a year. An on-premises edition exists for firms that need it. A business with no tech staff gains here. The vendor runs the platform, so a whole kind of work and risk goes away.

Customizing each system in Business Central vs Odoo

Odoo's open code is its calling card. Developers write modules in Python, and anyone can read and alter the source. A large community publishes add-ons of varying quality. Odoo Studio lets non-developers adjust screens and fields in the Enterprise edition. So heavy changes need care when the next major version arrives.

Developers can read Business Central's base code, but they do not modify it. Instead, we deliver changes as AL extensions that subscribe to events. That keeps them apart from Microsoft's updates. Apps on Microsoft's marketplace also pass a technical check before listing. The result is less freedom than Odoo and more predictability at upgrade time.

📊Accounting depth

Accounting, audit trail and reporting

First, both systems run double-entry accounting with many currencies and companies. BC began as an accounting and distribution system for established firms, and it shows. It has dimensions on every entry, posting groups, fixed assets, intercompany and consolidation. It also has a change log that auditors can inspect.

Odoo's accounting has grown steadily and suits many small and midsize firms. It has localization packages for many regions. Accountants who know traditional ERP sometimes find its approach less conventional. So the fair advice is simple. Have your controller run a month-end close in each system before you decide.

🪧Who picks which

Who tends to choose which in the Business Central vs Odoo question

Odoo tends to attract firms that want a website, ecommerce, CRM and operations in one tool. It also attracts firms that value open source, or that have developers who enjoy shaping their own system. Also, start-ups and smaller firms often begin with a few apps and add more later.

Business Central tends to attract firms that already run Microsoft 365. Their finance teams want a conventional, auditable ledger, and they prefer the vendor to operate the platform. Distributors and makers with settled processes are typical. We can show you the BC side in a sandbox. We also point out where Odoo would be the more natural choice.

Questions

Business Central vs Odoo: frequently asked

Is Odoo really free?

The Community edition is free open source software. The Enterprise edition adds apps and features that many firms want, and it is a paid subscription. In both cases, setup, hosting and customization carry their own effort. Check Odoo's site for current terms. Then compare the whole effort of owning each system, not just the license line. We can help you list that effort for a Business Central vs Odoo comparison. Then the numbers rest on facts.

Is Business Central open source?

No. It is a commercial Microsoft product, licensed per user. Developers can read the base application code and extend it with AL. But they do not alter it, and Microsoft operates the online service. So you gain a predictable upgrade path in return for less freedom at the core. For many midsize firms, that trade is a good one. For firms with strong developer teams, the open code of Odoo may matter more.

Which is better for manufacturing?

Both include manufacturing. Odoo has an MRP app with related apps for maintenance and quality. BC Premium provides production orders, BOMs, routings, capacity and planning. So test your own production flow in each, because fit depends on detail. Pick one typical product. Then run it from sales order to finished goods in both systems. We can help you set up that test on the Business Central side. Then we show you where the standard features end.

Business Central vs Odoo: can we move from Odoo to BC?

Yes. We export customers, vendors, items, open documents and balances from Odoo. Then we import them with configuration packages. Custom Odoo modules do not transfer. So we match each one to a standard feature, an add-on or a new extension. Many turn out to be unnecessary.

Does Business Central have a website builder and ecommerce like Odoo?

There is no built-in website builder. BC includes a Shopify connector that syncs products, stock and orders with a Shopify store. Other ecommerce platforms connect through marketplace apps or the standard APIs, which we can set up for you. So you keep the site tool you like and still get one ledger.
