Business Central on premises: installation, updates and support

Business Central on premises is the same ERP as the online service, installed on servers you control or rent. It suits companies with data location rules, weak connectivity or systems that must sit beside the ERP on a local network. We install it and keep it updated. We also help you judge honestly whether the online version would serve you better.

🖥️What it is

What a Business Central on premises deployment consists of

An installation has three tiers. A SQL Server database holds the data. The Business Central Server service runs the business logic and background jobs. Web server parts on Internet Information Services deliver the browser client. The same service layer feeds the mobile app, APIs and web services.

These tiers can share one machine for a small company. Or they can spread across several for load and safety. Users sign in with Windows accounts, a user name and password, or Microsoft Entra ID. The servers can stand in your own building, in a hosting provider's data center or on virtual machines in Azure.

⚖️Cloud or local

When Business Central on premises is the right call

Good reasons for a local installation exist. Some contracts or rules require data to stay in a named site. Other sites have links too weak for a cloud service. A few factories run machines and local databases that must swap data with the ERP at very low delay.

Habit is a weaker reason. With the online service, Microsoft handles the servers, backups and updates. Several newer features, Copilot among them, arrive online first. A local installation means you own patching, security hardening, disaster recovery and version upgrades. We lay out both sides for your case, and we have no stake in which one you choose.

  • ✓Data location requirements
  • ✓Unreliable internet links
  • ✓Local machine integrations
  • ✓Existing server investment
  • ✓Strict network isolation
🧰How we work

How we install Business Central on your servers

We agree the size and layout with your IT team. That covers how many server instances you need and where the database lives. It also covers how users outside the office connect and how backups are taken and tested. Microsoft publishes system requirements for each version. We check your operating system and SQL Server editions against them first.

The installation runs over a remote session with your administrators present. Service accounts get the least rights they need. Connections get proper encryption. Then separate test and live instances are created, and your license is loaded. Extensions go in with the standard tools, so later updates are routine.

🔄Staying current

Keeping Business Central on premises updated

Microsoft releases a new major version in each of its two yearly release waves. Monthly cumulative updates arrive in between. Online tenants get these on their own. On a local installation, nothing changes until someone applies the update. That is both the appeal and the risk.

Every version has a published support lifecycle. After it ends, fixes and security updates stop. Falling several versions behind also makes the later upgrade larger. We set a sensible rhythm with you. We apply updates to the test instance first and run your key processes and extensions against it. Then we schedule the live update for a quiet period.

🛡️Pitfalls

Pitfalls, and what you receive from us

The risks are operational. One is backups that are taken but never restored as a test. Another is a web client exposed to the internet without proper protection. A third is a single server with no plan for hardware failure. A fourth is administrator knowledge held by one person. We raise each of these during design, not after an incident.

At handover, you receive an installation document. It lists servers, instances, accounts, ports and settings. You also get a backup and restore procedure that we have tried, and an update procedure. If you later decide to move online, Microsoft's cloud migration tool can carry your data across from a current local version.

Questions

Business Central on premises questions

Is Business Central on premises still available?

Yes. Microsoft keeps releasing on-premises versions alongside the online service. New major versions arrive in each release wave. Microsoft puts more investment into online, and some features exist there only. So it is worth checking the features you care about. We compare your list with each option, and we tell you plainly what an on-premises choice would cost you in features.

How is an on-premises installation licensed?

You obtain licenses through a Microsoft partner. The on-premises licensing guide describes the models and what each user type may do. SQL Server and Windows Server are licensed on their own. Microsoft sets the current terms and prices, so we point you to its published guide. We then help you count your users and match each to the right type.

Can we host Business Central on premises in Azure?

You can. Running the on-premises software on Azure virtual machines gives you control over the servers without owning hardware. It is still your installation to patch and back up. That makes it different from Business Central online, where Microsoft runs the service. We help you size the machines and plan the backups for that setup.

Which features differ from the online version?

The core application is the same. Differences appear in services that depend on Microsoft's cloud. Examples are Copilot features, some connectors and the managed environments in the admin center. You can set up certain integrations locally with extra work. We compare the list against your needs before you decide. Then you pick with the full facts in hand.

Can we move to the cloud later?

Yes. Microsoft provides a cloud migration tool. It copies data from a supported on-premises version into an online environment. Customizations must be in the form of extensions to go with it. We usually bring the local system up to a current version first. Then we migrate. So a Business Central on premises choice today does not lock you in.
