Made-to-order Business Central for furniture manufacturers

Business Central for furniture manufacturers has to cope with one awkward fact. The same sofa or desk is sold in dozens of fabrics, finishes and sizes, and most of it is built only after the order arrives. We set up items, options, production and delivery. So a salesperson can quote a piece, and the workshop knows exactly what to build.

Handling options in Business Central for furniture manufacturers

The first design choice is how to show choice. Item variants suit a fixed list, such as a chair frame in six stains. Each variant has its own stock and can be planned alone, while sharing one item card. Item attributes add searchable detail like style, material and room.

Options can multiply, with fabric times finish times size times leg style. Variants then become hard to manage. At that point, a product configurator add-on asks the questions at order entry. It builds the bill of materials and the price. We look at your catalog and order history before we recommend a path.

🪚Build to order

Workshop flow in Business Central for furniture manufacturers

Makers build upholstered and case goods in stages. Premium production orders carry a routing through cutting, machining, assembly, finishing and upholstery. Each stage records time and material. You can create orders straight from the sales line. So the workshop ticket and the customer order stay linked.

Simpler products, such as a table built from stocked tops and bases, fit assembly orders in Essentials. Assemble-to-order creates the assembly when you enter the sales line, and it ships it when built. Many makers use both. They use production for the frame shop and assembly for final configuration.

Buying lumber and fabric with Business Central for furniture manufacturers

So raw materials in Business Central for furniture manufacturers come in units that do not match how you use them. Buyers order hardwood by volume, but the shop uses it by the part. Fabric arrives on rolls, and the cutter cuts it by length. Sheet goods leave offcuts. Units of measure and scrap allowances on the bill of materials bring planned use close to reality.

Fabric dye lots matter, because two rolls of the same color can differ. Lot tracking lets the cutter take one order from one lot. A reservation holds that roll for the job. You can also buy customer-specific fabrics straight against the order, using special order purchasing.

Quotes, deposits and staged invoicing

Most made-to-order furniture needs a deposit, so Business Central for furniture manufacturers handles that too. A prepayment on the sales order raises a deposit invoice for a set share of the order. It holds the deposit as a liability until delivery. It then deducts it from the final invoice. A simple approval rule can hold production until the deposit is posted.

Trade and contract customers, such as designers, hotels and office fit-out firms, get their own price lists and payment terms. You can run large contract orders with installation as projects. So the furniture, freight and fitting labor are all costed against one job.

🚛Getting it there

Delivery dates in Business Central for furniture manufacturers

Order promising works out an earliest ship date from material availability and production capacity. That beats a standing estimate quoted from habit. As the production order moves, you can refresh the expected date on the sales line. So customer service answers a status question from the order itself.

Finished pieces are bulky. You often deliver them on your own trucks or with specialist carriers. Shipping agents, service codes and warehouse shipments cover the basics. Route planning, delivery booking and proof of delivery on a phone come from a delivery app or an add-on. We match it to your volume.

Questions

Business Central for furniture manufacturers: your questions

Does Business Central include a product configurator?

Not a rules-based one. The standard tools are item variants and assemble-to-order, where you can edit component lines on the order. Guided selection needs more. That means validation of combinations, automatic bills and option pricing. For those, you need an add-on. Several suit furniture and similar trades. We help you compare them against your own catalog.

Can it manage custom one-off pieces?

Yes. You can quote a one-off with a project. You can also create a production order from a copied bill of materials and adjust it for the design. Actual labor and material then post against it. So you learn what bespoke work really costs. That makes the next quote more honest, and it shows which custom jobs are worth taking.

How do we handle showroom and retail sales?

Showrooms can enter sales orders directly, with floor stock held in its own location. For a till, card payments and quick sales of accessories, a point of sale add-on connects to the same items and customers. Online sales can use the built-in Shopify connector. So every channel shares one stock figure and one customer list.

Can it cost each stage of production?

Work centers carry a cost rate. Time posted at each routing step then values the labor and overhead for that stage. You consume material for each operation where you link components to routing steps. The finished order statistics page compares expected and actual for each. So you see which stage runs over, and by how much.

What about imported components or finished goods?

Purchase orders in foreign currency, item charges for freight and duty, and transfer orders from port to plant are standard. Container tracking with estimated arrival by vessel is not standard. However, expected receipt dates on purchase lines give planning what it needs. So imported parts still reach the workshop plan, even without a tracking add-on.
