Business Central vs Plex: which cloud system suits your plant

Business Central vs Plex is a comparison makers draw when they want a cloud system. Plex, part of Rockwell Automation, is a manufacturing platform that combines ERP with shop floor execution and quality. Business Central is Microsoft's general ERP, with production in its Premium license. Plex starts from the machine and works outward. Business Central starts from the ledger and the order.

🏭The two systems

Business Central vs Plex: two starting points

Plex began as cloud software for makers, and Rockwell Automation, the industrial automation company, now owns it. Its platform brings together shop floor execution, quality management, production monitoring and ERP. People link it widely with automotive suppliers, food and drink makers and other discrete and process plants.

In Business Central vs Plex, BC is a broad ERP for small and mid-sized firms in any sector. Manufacturing is one module among several. Premium has production bills of materials, routings, work and machine centers, capacity, planning and outside work. Extensions add shop floor data capture and formal quality management.

Shop floor control and quality

Plex records production at the operation as it happens. It has operator screens, container labels, inspection checks and links to machines. Some plants face customers who audit process control and traceability at every step. For them, that built-in execution layer is the main reason to choose it over a general ERP.

In BC, staff post output and use of parts through production journals or the output journal. They can do it by hand or from a scanning app. Also, lot and serial tracking are standard. Inspection plans, non-conformance handling and machine links come from marketplace add-ons. We help you select and set them up around your routings.

💼Finance and sales

Business Central vs Plex: finance, distribution and the rest

Many makers are also distributors, service providers or project firms. Business Central is strong in those surrounding areas. It has multi-company finance with consolidation, dimensions, warehouse management with bins, service orders, project costing and a built-in Shopify connector for online sales. Each of those areas posts to the same general ledger.

Also, it gains from Microsoft 365. Staff can prepare quotes from Outlook, edit lists in Excel and publish them back. Power BI reports sit inside role centers. When production is only part of the picture, a general ERP can serve the whole company. One system does it all.

🎚️Which fits

Which plants lean toward Plex and which toward Business Central

High-volume, repeat production under strict customer quality standards leans toward a platform with execution and quality at its core. Automotive supply is typical. Also, the more your edge depends on real-time control of each operation, the stronger that case becomes. Plex was built with that kind of plant in mind.

Still, job shops, make-to-order builders, assemblers and mixed make and sell firms often lean toward BC. Then their need is dependable planning, costing and order handling more than machine-level control. They also value a system that a small team can run and adapt without specialist staff.

Testing Business Central against your own routings

A comparison on paper only goes so far. So we take one typical product, then load its bill of materials and routing into a sandbox. Then we run it from sales order through planning, release, use of parts, output and costing. Your production and finance leads watch by screen share and ask questions as it runs.

After that session, we write down what worked as standard, what needed an add-on and what would not fit. Our consultants work remotely from our Phoenix office. The outcome is a short document that you can set beside whatever the other vendor shows you.

Questions

Business Central vs Plex: manufacturer questions

Does Business Central include a manufacturing execution system?

No. It includes production orders, routings, capacity and journals for posting output and use of parts. Real-time operator terminals, machine data and detailed execution come from third-party extensions. They can also come from a separate execution system linked through the APIs. So decide how much shop floor control you really need. Then check whether a standard setup plus an add-on can deliver it. We help you run that check against your own routings.

Is Plex a full ERP?

Plex offers ERP functions such as financials, purchasing and stock. It also has execution and quality tools. All of it targets makers. For the current extent of each module, the vendor's own documentation is the reliable source. We do not speak for Plex. But we can show you how Business Central covers your needs. Then you can set the two side by side. That comparison is fair when it uses the same sample product on both sides.

Business Central vs Plex: can BC meet automotive customer rules?

Parts of them. Blanket orders, lot tracking and planning are standard. EDI releases, container labels and formal quality steps need add-ons. Suppliers with modest volumes often succeed this way. High-volume plants may prefer a platform centered on execution. So ask your customers which records they audit, and test those steps first. We help you map each customer rule to a standard feature or an add-on.

Which license does manufacturing need in Business Central?

Premium. It contains everything in Essentials plus manufacturing and service management. All full users in a tenant use the same license type, and Team Members are available for light users. Microsoft posts the current prices on its site. We help you count which users need which type, so you do not pay for more than you need.

Could we keep a shop floor system and use Business Central for ERP?

Yes. That is a common design. The execution system reports output, scrap and use of parts. Those postings flow into BC production orders through its APIs. Planning, purchasing, costing and finance stay in the ERP. So you keep the tool that suits the floor, and you still get one ledger. We help design the link and test it in a sandbox.
